Sistema Toronto is first and foremost a social development program, using ensemble-based music education to transform the lives of at-risk children. Sistema Toronto students work together for 10 hours of weekly instruction. They learn strings (violin, viola, cello, or double bass), percussion, choir and Music & Movement while developing important life skills like problem solving, empathy, and self-advocacy.



Job Description

Sistema Toronto is seeking a violin teacher to teach at our St. Martin de Porres centre in East Scarborough.

Teaching start date: September 10, 2019

Teaching hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 3:30pm-6pm, Sept.- June and follows the TDSB  Academic Calendar. This position also includes approx. 6 paid professional development sessions per year, dates and times TBA.

Working closely with the Centre Director, reporting to Executive Director, and following Sistema Toronto's music and social curriculum, instructors are responsible for teaching and directing children Grades 1-8 in an ensemble/class teaching environment. Some small group and individual instruction will be necessary.

The program takes place between 3:30-6:00pm 4 days a week, Sept - June. Some evening and weekend hours around concert events is required. Violin teacher candidates must be available every day of the normal operating hours of the Sistema Toronto program.  Average total teaching hours are 7 hours/wk.



Requirements:

This position is suited for an enthusiastic, highly-motivated and naturally communicative individual with experience in working with and motivating children. 

We are looking for candidates who possess a strong demonstrated music teaching background with specific experience in working with children in a group environment. The ability to work independently, and cooperatively, in a fast-paced social-learning environment together with a busy teaching team is an essential asset. Experience working with children or youth from priority communities is also an assett.

Because this position will include proximity to children, successful candidates will be asked to provide a current Vulnerable Sector Screening.
