REEL CANADA is a charitable organization that celebrates Canada through film. Canadian films are the stories we tell about ourselves – they open the door to so many conversations about place, nation, identity, and what it means to be Canadian.  REEL CANADA promotes the power and diversity of Canadian film and encourages this on-going conversation.
Our travelling film festival has held over 6,000 screenings and reached over one million students and other Canadians since 2005.

Job Description

The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for the staging, technical production, and video asset requirements for all REEL CANADA screenings and events. This school year, the TD will be responsible for approximately 15 larger-scale events with more elaborate tech requirements, as well as for providing basic support to as needed for partner-run National Canadian Film Day screenings. The TD will assist the team with managing and converting file types to ensure all venues have films in show content in the appropriate formats.

START DATE: Approximately September 23, 2019
SALARY: 50K – 70K annually, commensurate with experice
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Determine technical requirements for venues (schools, theatres, etc.)
  • Rental of staging equipment and contracting technicians as required
  • Prepare show-ready content on computers for each event
  • Prepare/maintain technical kits for each event
  • Conduct Skype tests and troubleshoot issues
  • Manage/troubleshoot staging and technical setup on-site as needed
  • Assist with event-day management and operations
  • Remotely assist partners with technical trouble-shooting and advice as needed, for smaller-scale screenings
  • Prepare and/or convert video files into appropriate formats for venues/screenings as needed
  • Work with NCFD Print Traffic Coordinator to ensure all materials are received, catalogued and distributed
  • Hire and liaise with livestream company and other technicians for two live webcasts each year, ensure all assets are delivered in the appropriate formats
  • Edit/update sponsor logo loop image files, preshow video loops, film trivia clips, etc. for screenings
 
Because technical demands ebb and flow throughout the year, during quiet times the TD may also be expected to support the team in any of the following areas, depending upon the successful candidate’s particular interests and strengths. Therefore, experience in any of these areas would be an asset. 
  • Office IT support: Computer, network, email support etc. for REEL CANADA staff
  • Video editing: Show content such as filmmaker montages, as well as programme promotional videos
  • Video asset management: Receive and catalogue new films as well as RC event video footage, locate files as needed
  • CRM Database (Salesforce) Management: System admin-level CRM management, including form integrations, bulk changes, auditing of data, pulling reports, etc.
  • Event coordination: Working with screening partners and teachers to arrange details of each event
  • Film programming: Pre-screen films and provide feedback for the programming team


Requirements:

  • Minimum two years of hands-on experience or training in technical production or A/V for film presentations and/or theatre
  • A self-starter who can complete projects independently
  • Team player and ability to take notes with grace
  • Ability to maintain calm under pressure and think on your feet
  • Ability to multi-task and manage several deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to flourish in a fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, attention to detail
  • Genuine passion for, and commitment to the REEL CANADA Mission, and personal affinity for REEL CANADA’s Values
  • Flexibility in work week hours
  • Valid driver’s licence is an asset
  • Mid-level French comprehension and reading is an asset, but not required
  • Love of Canadian film is an asset
