Organization Description

Artbooks is a centrally located 30-year-old artist-focused tax practice and we pride ourselves on having a family spirit of trust and accountability. We are a unique, laid back office with a dedication to helping artists and entrepreneurs gain confidence in their relationship with filing their taxes.

Job Description

Artbooks is seeking a freelance tax preparer. This is a position for a self-employed individual involved in the arts community who is looking to supplement their income for several months per year. Our busy period is February 15th to June 15th. Artbooks' tax preparers meet with clients to prepare annual tax returns for their sole propriertorships and provide support and counselling to clients on their individual tax situations. As a member of the Artbooks team, you would participate in kick-off meetings and wrap-up celebrations.

We are seeking a self-employed tax preparer who understands the challenges of the artistic life and who is familiar with contemporary arts culture in Canada. Familiarity with arts grants would be a definite asset.
  • In addition to being able to do tax submissions, you must have amazing counselling skills and be able to deal with stressed or upset clients, be able to answer client questions and be able to educate clients on their individual tax situation.
  • Candidates must have completed the HR Block tax course or equivalent and understanding of basic bookkeeping/accounting principles. Experience with HST/GST is essential.
  • Excellent communication skills are key – this means being able to work with clients in a supportive, empathetic manner and to explain their tax situations articulately.  At Artbooks, it is just as important to us to make people feel comfortable and relaxed in dealing with their taxes as it is to prepare excellent tax returns.
  • Great technical skills - experience with both Mac and PC computers, working with Excel in the presence of clients, comfort with professional tax software
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to prepare accurate tax returns and to follow-up on any issues that need to be resolved before a return can be submitted. Must work in compliance with CRA regulations. When there is an unusual tax situation, preparers need to be able to research and find answers.
We know that we are asking for a lot, but our team provides great training and it is a great bonus to be able to work in a warm, professional environment with people who also have artistic careers.
We are already in the middle of the current tax season but are seeking people who would like to learn how they can join our team and receive training for the upcoming season.
Unless you are one-in-a million, there will be some skills that need developing before you are ready to join our team. If you do have all the skills and experience listed above, then we would love to add you to our team right away.
