Founded in 1977, Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) at Riverwood strives to enrich community life by fostering an appreciation of the visual arts through Arts Education, Exhibition and Engagement; and by enhancing the vitality of artistic community.  Our vision is an inspired and enriched community, engaged in a full spectrum of visual arts activities.

Due to the popularity of our programs, we are expanding our teaching team. Are you an experienced art instructor with formal art training? Are you looking for a job with flexible hours, lots of variety and the opportunity to work with other ‘creatives’?

Job Description
Art Instructor; part-time casual for a variety of child, youth and adult programs. Art Instructors for child and youth programs will lead templated classes and art workshops in English for students aged 6 to 18 years, either in VAM studios or in local schools. Art Instructors for adult programs will lead templated workshops for corporate, community and seniors groups as part of a new initiative called Community heARTS.

VAM Classes for Children and Teens are progressive programs designed to encourage students to exercise their imaginations while practicing new skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Students work in small peer groups of up to 15 and learn about art history, the principles of design and art practices from around the globe. Each session is 8 to 10 weeks in duration and runs throughout the school year. Classes are offered after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as throughout the day on Saturdays.

ArtReach is a program designed to complement the Ontario school curriculum and is offered for students from kindergarten to grade 12 during the school year. Instructors will travel to schools on weekdays to deliver programs in a variety of mediums chosen by the teacher. Occasionally programs are offered in VAM studios.

Community heARTS is an inclusive program offering art workshops for adults of all abilities in a variety of mediums and settings to meet the needs and interests of the individual group.


The ideal Art Instructor candidate will be engaging, with excellent communication skills to enable them to develop a good rapport with students and parents.  They will have developed strong classroom management techniques, be organized, resourceful and have great problem solving abilities.

A post-secondary education in Visual Arts and Education is preferred with experience working in various media including, watercolour, acrylics, pastel, collage, dry media and printmaking as well as a basic knowledge of art history. We are looking for exceptional leaders with the ability to work independently, as well as being a good team player.

Chosen Art Instructors are required to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Police Check prior to beginning work.

Start Date -  October 2019

Hours of Work  -  Variable - Monday – Saturday between 8:30 am and 6:30 pm in the VAM Art Centre and other locations. 

Working Conditions - The incumbent works most of the time in a comfortable indoor setting with some physical demands such as lifting and/or moving heavy items. Access to a car is crucial.
