Organization Description

Dusk Dances

Dusk Dances is an outdoor dance festival that brings high quality contemporary and traditional dance to public parks. As dusk descends, a theatrical host leads the audience — which invariably includes children, dog walkers and local residents — to eclectic dance pieces that unfold in different areas of the park.

Choreographers from various backgrounds are invited to perform a ten-minute piece inspired by the park’s natural environment. Audiences are invited on a pay-what-you-can basis to an innovative site-specific festival, which is not only an artistic event but a social and cultural one as well.

We bring dance to the community by making it accessible
• physically – our venue is a public space
• financially – admission is pay what you can
• artistically – our programming is diverse, for all tastes and ages

We give choreographers a unique opportunity to showcase their work in a non-traditional dance venue, in front of a large and mostly new audience.

Job Description

The Dusk Dances outdoor dance festival is now in its 25th year, and we need Production, Front of House, and Floater volunteers to help create a magical experience for both the dancers and the audience.

LOCATION
Withrow Park (south of the Danforth between Logan and Carlaw)

DATES & TIMES
Performances take place every evening from Sunday, August 4, through Sunday, August 11, with an additional matinée performance on August 11. There is also a dress rehearsal on Saturday, August 3 and a rain-date dress rehearsal on Sunday, August 4.

Learn more about the volunteer roles available below, then visit https://forms.gle/W7ZswfM7u62zxrxH6 to register as a volunteer.

POSITIONS
A/ Production Volunteer
Production volunteers help the crew set up for every performance, by putting up signage, the information table, the dressing room/tent, sets, and props. Above all, they act as site security—they are stationed at a performance site or dressing room before and throughout each performance, to watch over equipment and to assist performers as needed.
** You will have some downtime in this position, so bring a book, a blanket, or whatever else you might need to enjoy your time in the park. **

Production volunteers are generally scheduled from 4:00–10:00 pm for evening performances and the dress rehearsal and from 11:00 am–4:30 pm for matinées (1 shift or 2 shifts).

B/ Front of House Volunteer
Front of house volunteers are the face of the festival. ALL front of house volunteers talk to passersby and audience members about the festival and answer questions. They also collect money. **There is a lot of standing and walking in these positions, so wear comfortable shoes!**

There are 3 Front of House roles:
1. Usher
−    Hand out programs and surveys; collect completed surveys
−    Guide the audience from site to site
−    Act as “crowd control” at each site
2. Information Table * limited positions available; priority given to returning volunteers and/or those who sign up for 3 or more shifts *
−    Sell T-shirts and other items
−    Hand out programs and surveys; collect completed surveys
3. Popcorn Person * limited positions available *
Make and sell popcorn! You might be stationed at the information table, you might carry popcorn for sale from site to site, or you might do both.

Front of house volunteers are generally scheduled from 5:30–10:30 pm for evening performances and from 12:15–4:15 pm for matinées.

C/ Floater Volunteer
Are you comfortable doing whatever needs doing, behind the scenes or among the audience? Are you prepared to do any—or all—of the above? Be a floater volunteer, and we’ll use you wherever we need you most during a shift!

There are a few additional positions available before and during the festival. See the Volunteer Registration form for more details and to indicate your interest and availability: https://forms.gle/W7ZswfM7u62zxrxH6.

Requirements:

Experience: This is an opportunity to see the inside workings of an outdoor cultural event. Anyone interested in arts management, art and performance, or customer service within an arts/cultural organization may find volunteering for Dusk Dances a valuable experience.

Flexibility: You may choose to interact with the audience a lot (as a Front of House Volunteer) or a little (as a Production Volunteer). Or you may choose to be a floater—to work wherever we need you most during a particular performance.

All that is required is a willingness to spend your evening (or afternoon for the matinée) outside with the Dusk Dances team, helping to deliver this event in the smoothest way possible. We also ask that you attend a volunteer orientation/training session at the end of July (dates and times to come).
