Open Roof Festival

Open Roof Festival is a not for profit music and film festival that has been delighting Toronto audiences for the last six years. Last season was a great success with over 4000 Torontonians attending 10 screenings throughout the summer. In its 6 years of operations, Open Roof has become a permanent fixture on Toronto’s must-do summer events listing. The organization is almost entirely volunteer driven, with experts supporting the many functional areas and is now looking to hire a new contract full-time operations director to ensure that the festival continues to give its patrons an exciting outdoor movie experience.

Job Description

Open Roof Festival is looking to hire a full-time contractor for the position of Operations Director. The position runs from May 1, 2020 - August 31, 2020, with some availability required both before and after the contract for planning and closing meetings. This position is ultimately responsible to ensure the seamless execution of 10 festival screenings running one evening every week from late June to late August.

The director will be responsible for all of the following: Managing festival logistics including box office, front-of-house, tech, volunteer coordination, venue set-up, providing information to the general community and responding to requests and inquiries about the festival; Supervising all areas of operations that include programming, technical, marketing (print and social media) and other general event logistics; Developing and executing a robust marketing and communications plan; Managing the distribution of all communications including the web site, email list and press releases (with the support of our publicity team); Coordinating web site maintenance including copy editing, data entry and web database maintenance; Meeting with board of directors on a weekly basis during the festival to report progress and obtain any support needed; Cultivating community partnerships, specifically responsible for outreach to previous partners and new partners for screening co-presentation; Acting as the key point of contact for festival sponsors, acting as a festival liaison at each screening; Writing 2-3 grant applications prior to the festival; Planning and executing the load-in and load out of all AV gear for the screenings with the support of technical experts.


Experience with film festival operations or general event management; Excellent project management skills; Ability to work independently with minimal direction; Ability to manage and motivate a large team of volunteers; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Demonstrated ability to work well in a high-pressure environment; Experience with word press is an asset but not required; Driver’s license to assist with the transportation of festival gear (required)
