Job Description

This paid internship is with Canada's National Observer starting at $14/hr.

Help shape the future of Canadian media, working alongside the team at Canada’s National Observer building revenue through subscriptions and fundraising at Observer Media Group. For more than a decade, Observer Media Group has led the digital re-invention of Canadian media, driven the national conversation on energy and climate change, and made history as the first all-digital publication to win a National Newspaper Award and a Michener Award citation. And our Election Integrity Reporting Project has placed us at the centre of Canada’s battle against online misinformation and electoral manipulation.

We seek a detailed-oriented communicator to help support our next phase of groundbreaking journalism and organizational growth. You’re the right person for the job if you care about climate change, the environment, and human rights.

This position is based in Vancouver.
 



Requirements:

Our Development Associate is a self-starter who builds and maintains relationships with National Observer subscribers and donors through "high-touch" engagement & relationship stewardship. You are responsible for building a pipeline of prospects and engaging them to further our mission of building excellent independent journalism in Canada.

You maintain a calendar of funded journalism projects and oversee appropriate delivery and you compile metrics on impact and reach. You have a keen understanding of climate, environment, and disinformation and other social issues and are able to convey how our readers' generosity enables the next high impact journalism and investigations.

You’ll find this position particularly fulfilling if you share the Observer’s commitment to rigorous coverage of climate and social justice issues, combating misinformation, and developing innovative ways of delivering high-quality journalism online.

You are right for this position if you have:
  • Post-secondary Degree / Diploma or equivalent working experience
  • Experience working in fundraising, digital publishing and or the not-for-profit sector
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to connect with readers, subscribers and donors and communicate the value of their contribution to independent media and to National Observer’s journalism
