Philip Beesley Architect Inc. & Living Architecture Systems Group

 Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI) and the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) bring together pioneering researchers and industry partners from centres across North America and Europe in a highly interdisciplinary research cluster dedicated to developing interdisciplinary working methods, innovative technologies and new critical aesthetics within the emerging field of responsive architecture. “Living Architecture”, as proposed by LASG, is the integration of near-living qualities into our built environment through the interdisciplinary synthesis of technological systems. Applying knowledge from interdisciplinary research, LASG is developing environments that can move, respond, and learn; environments that grow themselves and that are adaptive and empathic toward their inhabitants. This research is influencing how we build architecture by transforming the physical structures that support and enclose buildings, the technical systems that gather information and control our interior environments, and the expressive aesthetics of architecture.
 
The LASG operates in conjunction with ​PBAI studio, working in a wide range of projects that include experimental interactive installation and sculpture projects using advanced digital prototyping equipment, as well as traditional architectural developments, graphic design, and exhibitry. The studio is associated with the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture and includes frequent exchanges with students and researchers.  Principals of the studio are professors at the School.   More information on LASG and PBAI can be seen at http://livingarchitecturesystems.com/ and www.philipbeesley.com
 



Job Description


The Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) and Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI) are seeking a Business and Development Manager to oversee the financial administration of an interdisciplinary studio composed of researchers, designers and engineers, led by artist and professor Philip Beesley. LASG and PBAI also manage a small publishing organization, Riverside Architectural Press (RAP). The LASG, PBAI and RAP are closely associated and are led by a unified  executive group. The studio consists of a small group of highly motivated, positive, creative individual working in experimental design, engineering and art. The combined groups are closely associated with the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo.  

The candidate should be interested in visual art, architecture and experimental design. Studio revenues are drawn from combinations of academic research, cultural industries including museums, galleries and public art, and private-sector installations.

Philip Beesley Architect Inc. is a small architectural firm that engages in numerous collaborations that include public art installations and  exhibitions in architecture, sculpture and couture, employing digital fabrication, complex geometry and interactive systems.  Collaborators include experimental chemist Rachel Armstrong (Newcastle) and  Iris van Herpen (Amsterdam and Paris).

Riverside Architectural Press is a publishing organization that undertakes a small number of publications oriented to contemporary design each year in collaboration with Waterloo Architecture and international research partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain balanced budget and develop a growth strategy focused both on financial gain and growth opportunity
  • Compose and administer funding applications including arts and academic research grants
  • Maintain regular budget (Studio and Project) reviews, projections and approvals 
  • Conduct research to identify new markets, organizations, and individuals interested in future collaboration; follow up on new business opportunities
  •  Sourcing art market and high end commercial contracts (industry knowledge required) 
  • Coordinate and focus  agreements for research ventures, including LASG partner research projects and students.
  • Prepare and negotiate project and employment contracts ensuring adherence to law-established rules and guidelines
  • Staff management, training, and evaluation, including studio executive development and mentoring
  • Actively provide executive team with feedback


Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, marketing or related field
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Diplomacy, senior judgement, ability to work effectively with widely varying organizations from multiple sectors
  • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task
  • Proficient with Microsoft, Google Drive, and Quickbooks
  • IT fluency considered an asset

EXPERIENCE
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a Business and Development Management role
  • Cultural sector experience required;  non-profit and commercial sector high end industry knowledge an asset


KEY QUALITIES
  • Ability to flourish with minimal guidance, be proactive, and handle uncertainty
  • Flexible, able to take on widely varying responsibilities 
  • Patient, highly cooperative and communicative in diverse groups
  • Excellent organizational skills, with emphasis on priorities and goal setting
