Jane’s Walk is a community-based approach to city building that uses volunteer-led walking tours to make space for people to observe, reflect, share, question and re-imagine the places in which they live, work and play. What began as a handful of walking conversations in Toronto has now grown to a global movement with hundreds of cities on nearly every continent hosting Jane’s Walks every year.

The Jane’s Walk Steering Committee is a voluntary group governing Jane’s Walk Toronto on the MakeWay platform. The Steering Committee is based in Toronto, on the unceded territories of the Wendat, Haudenosaunee, the Anishinabeg, and the Mississaugas of the Credit people. It was formed by some of the folks who convened the original Jane’s Walks in 2006. The global Jane’s Walk community is a non-hierarchical, anti-oppressive, and inclusive movement. Learn more about Jane’s Walk by reading our updated guiding principles.

The Jane’s Walk Steering Committee is currently recruiting for three (3) positions. We are seeking energetic and committed individuals, ready to contribute.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • The commitment is 5-10 hours a month, with seasonal peaks (February - May)

  • The Steering Committee is responsible for hiring a team to organize and coordinate the Toronto Jane’s Walk Festival each year

  • We all fundraise to ensure the Festival can happen and that our platform can continue to grow

  • We keep our communications engine running - website, newsletter, social media

  • We steward the global project by fostering conversation among Jane’s Walk City Organizers

  • We provide guidance on the principles and practicalities of leading a Jane’s Walk

  • We liaise with Jane Jacobs’ surviving family and friends

At Jane’s Walk, we are working to better reflect the diversity of our community on our Steering Committee and City Organizer teams. To that end, we are encouraging people who have too often been excluded from city-building and urban literacy conversations to get involved in our Steering Committee. This includes people from racialized communities, Indigenous peoples, gender non-binary, youth and differently-abled people.

Jane Jacobs’ friends started Jane’s Walk following her death in 2006 and 15 years later, the ideas of Jane Jacobs continue to inspire city planners, designers, policy advocates and activists. Because of her insights, thousands of people around the world find their way to Jane’s Walk. We want you to be one of them.

Please fill out the online form to express your interest by Monday, April 5th, 2021. We aim to connect with short-listed applicants from there to organize a virtual coffee date. We would like to on-board new committee members before the Festival in May 2021!
