Factory Media Centre (FMC) is seeking dedicated, driven, and enthusiastic individuals to join its Board of Directors. Serving on a board is a challenging and rewarding way to support your local arts community.

FMC is Hamilton’s artist-run resource centre for film, video, new media, installation, and sound art. The Factory advances the discourse of contemporary media arts locally and nationally through exhibitions, screenings, workshops, educational and community-based programs, as well as access to multimedia equipment, editing software, and studio space.

FMC has multiple positions available, and are especially seeking individuals with a background or interest in Fundraising and Development and Special Events. If this sounds like you, or if you have any questions, email Kristina at

Board Responsibilities:

  • Attend monthly board meetings, and the annual general meeting
  • Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports or other relevant documents
  • Understand and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mandate and programs
  • Discuss and vote on important issues pertaining to the governance of the organization, including strategic focus in the form of short and long-term goals
  • Implement policies and procedures in line with the current strategic plan, help run committees, and advise and assist FMC staff when needed
  • Lend experience and expertise by actively participating in meetings and at least one committee (programming, finance, communications, equipment, fundraising)
  • Keep up-to-date on standards in the artist-run and non-profit sectors, attend professional development opportunities when necessary
  • Ensure the organization is meeting all its legal and financial responsibilities
  • Inform the executive of any potential conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality
Role Specific Responsibilities

Fundraising & Development Director
  • In addition to the Director at Large duties, the Fundraising and Development chair will also be responsible for identifying new revenue streams to reach FMC’s annual fundraising goals including: 
    • Organising and helping with fundraising, donation campaigns and events
    • Developing strategies to encourage new or increased contributions
    • Recruit corporate sponsors, and seek one-off donations and in-kind sponsorships
    • Attending fundraising events; and promoting the organization’s activities and programs
    • Write speeches, press releases, or other promotional materials to increase awareness of the causes, missions, or goals of our organization
    • Compile or develop materials to submit to granting or other funding organizations
Special Events Director
  • In addition to the Director at Large duties, the Special Events chair will assist FMC staff and Board with planning, scheduling, and overseeing special events including:
    • Research industry trends in the media art world to implement at FMC
    • Work together with the Fundraising and Development Director to plan large scale donor events

Please note that serving on the board is a volunteer commitment. Board terms are two years and the time commitment is approximately 5-8 hours per month. Ideal candidates are practicing media artists and/or community-minded persons who have a strong interest in arts and culture. Professional training in the arts is not required.
