Biz Smarts is a webinar series that provides business skills development for artists, makers, and creative entrepreneurs.

Biz Smarts is our online webinar series with up-to-date recommendations on a range of business skills topics, that are specifically tailored for makers in creative community.

Every year in March, the Biz Smarts webinar series goes live in participating business and cultural centres across Ontario so that the webinar topic can be discussed in further detail at the centre. It is a chance for artists/creative entrepreneurs to further engage with:
  • The webinar topic
  • The resources at the centre
  • The webinar facilitator and centre expert
  • Other artists who are looking to start their businesses

Business Planning for the Arts and Creative Industries

Delivered by Michael Martyn

As a creative person your ideas are your most valuable asset. Communicating your ideas through your artwork is one thing, but how do we take a concept for a creative business and explain it to the bean counters?

This webinar is designed by a career artist (who also has an MBA) to draw upon your skills as a creative and make them work to the requirements of a structured business plan.
The 75 minute session starts from the artist's perspective and moves through to the basics of creating a business plan.

At the end of the session participants will:

  • reflect upon why they wish to pursue arts employment;
  • understand the different roles they can expect to be in as a business person;
  • clarify the context within which they will function as an arts business;
  • understand the basic terminology and techniques of business planning.
Artists are born communicators. Writing a business plan is the most important communication tool you have when you start a business. Just like anything else you create there are a few things you need to know first and a few things that will develop as you go, so understanding the forms and techniques of the medium are key.
