The Hamilton Festival Theatre Company strives to make theatre accessible and affordable to both audience members and theatre makers and is committed to fostering the development of professional artists in Hamilton.
The company produces a year-round educational program for emerging theatre professionals, the annual Hamilton Fringe Festival, and site-specific winter festival, Frost Bites.
The annual Fringe Festival is an 11-day un-juried arts festival that runs every summer in the core of downtown Hamilton. The organization is a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals and adheres to their Four Guiding Principles:
1/ Participants will be selected on a non-juried basis.
2/ 100% of the box office revenue is returned to the participating companies.
3/ Fringe Festival producers have no control over the artistic content of the productions.
4/ Festivals must be easily accessible for all audiences and artists to participate.

Job Description

The Hamilton Fringe Festival is currently seeking a Technical Director for a part-time contract position. Reporting to the Executive Director and working in close collaboration with Fringe staff, this individual will oversee, manage, and coordinate the technical operations of the 2018 Hamilton Fringe Festival.

Please note: The Technical Director agrees to work part-time and/or irregular hours during the contract period (March 5th to July 31, 2018) in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.


Key Areas of Responsibility 
  • Coordinate and oversee all technical aspects of the 2018 Hamilton Fringe Festival
  • Train and oversee the Venue Technicians hired for the 2018 Hamilton Fringe Festival
  • Ensure a safe working environment for the Technical crew
  • Ensure all Venues are appropriately equipped and that all technical equipment is maintained and functioning safely. Rental of additional technical equipment may be required.
  • Assign Venues to Venue Technicians according to their experience and expertise
  • Assign Venues to the participating companies in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Coordinate and assist with the load-ins, set-ups and strikes in all performance spaces
  • Direct and support Venue Technicians in their preparations for technical rehearsals where needed. 
  • Plan and Facilitate a Technical Seminar for all participating companies
The responsibilities listed above address the key duties of this position. Additional related tasks may be assigned at the discretion of the Executive Director

The Technical Director will train and supervise 4 Venue Technicians (including 2 students hired under the Canada Summer Jobs Program). 

Professional Qualities and Skills:
  • The ideal candidate will be a hardworking, organized, and motivated individual with an interest in making a contribution the arts and the Hamilton community
  • Graduation from a relevant post-secondary program or extensive practical experience in performance design and technical theatre
  • Must be able to lead the installation of lighting and sound equipment in a variety of theatrical spaces
  • Experience monitoring the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment
  • Experience with independent theatre production
  • Ability to accommodate a schedule that will sometimes require work on evenings and weekends.
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Valid first aid certification is an asset.
