Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is a not-for-profit organization and North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market.

Held in Toronto each spring, the Festival presents approximately 200 Canadian and international films to audiences exceeding 210,000. For documentary professionals, Hot Docs offers a dynamic slate of industry events and initiatives, including the renowned Hot Docs Forum and Hot Docs Deal Maker pitch meeting service, as well as a full roster of professional development opportunities and networking occasions. The 26th annual Hot Docs will take place April 25 - May 5, 2019.

Additionally, Hot Docs also operates the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, a 650-seat, century-old screening venue in Toronto, and is the event organizer for the annual World Congress of Science and Factual Producers, an international, member-run industry event.

Job Description

February 5 - March 30 (2-3 days per week)
April 2 - May 18 (5 days per week)
May 21 - 25 (2-3 days per week)

Preference given to those interested in pursuing a career in events or have graduated from an events or arts administration program.

REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Culture & Community Development

Reporting to the Associate Director, Culture & Community Development, the Event Associate will:
  • Research and source proposals from event venues for use during Hot Docs.
  • Become familiarized with the venue landscape in Toronto including walk-throughs of past and new event spaces.
  • Contribute ideas and practical ways of contributing to the creation of engaging Festival events.
  • Assist the Associate Director of Culture & Community Development with event related operations such as scheduling pick-ups and deliveries, on-site setup, and communication with venues and suppliers.
  • Attend all events as required and act as a liaison between the event venue, volunteers, and guests.
  • Provide administrative support as needed.


  • Exceptional organization and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional administrative skills, specifically Excel and Powerpoint/Keynote.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Resourceful and creative.
  • Remains calm and makes logical decisions under pressure.
  • Strong team player, takes initiative, and responsibility for tasks assigned.
  • Event production experience considered a strong asset.
  • Understanding of basic design principles considered a strong asset.
