Job Description

The Canadian Opera Company (COC) aims to bring the transformative experience of opera to our local, national, and global audience every day of the year. To help achieve this goal, the COC is looking for a Director of Public Relations to develop, implement and manage the company’s internal and external communications strategies in order to promote and generate increased public awareness and engagement of COC’s events, programs, artists and initiatives. 

The incumbent will accomplish this goal by collaborating with internal departments, external media, local communities and other groups to generate positive public awareness about the company.  The ideal candidate will also seek to communicate and educate our audience through creative methods and platforms.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participate in the development and implementation of strategic communications plans in order to obtain increased local, national and international publicity and press incorporating established marketing messages and taking into account branding and market positioning
• Recommend public relations strategies to support our business goals which include:  building awareness beyond the mainstage, audience growth and diversity, increase earned and contributed revenue and expanding the company’s international network and impact
• Promote the COC’s programs and initiatives through traditional and non-traditional media platforms in order to reach various target groups
• Direct and contribute to the editorial for all communications produced in-house that drives COC’s brand, increases audience engagement and attendance including traditional publications, photographic, video, and social media content including:

o Press releases
o News articles
o Original video content
o Media advisories
o Fact sheets
o Pitch letters
o Other PR collateral

• In coordination with the Chief Communications Officer and the Senior Manager, Creative, ensure consistency of brand, tone and content in coordination with staff
• Proactively seek out and create media exposure opportunities to showcase the experience of opera to existing patrons and to engage potential new audience members and donors
• Build and maintain a network of essential media contacts, marketing specialists, photographers and videographers
• Respond to enquiries from patrons, donors, media, the community and other stakeholders
• Maintain a keen understanding of industry trends and makes recommendations regarding future communications and marketing plans
• Oversee and approve use of COC production photography for third-party requests
• Manage and lead the public relations team
• Manage public relations budget



Requirements:

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• University degree in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of 7-10 years proven work experience in public relations and communications
• Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns with local, national, and international impact
• Experience acting as a company spokesperson
• Strong research skills, exceptional writing and editing skills
• Proven ability to prepare concise media materials including press releases, fact sheets, etc.
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with key media outlets and other business partners
• Knowledge and understanding of media directories, newswires, monitoring services and other PR tools
• Knowledge of ethical PR best practices and associated regulations
• Highly effective project management, prioritization, multi-tasking and time-management skills to meet deadlines
• Excellent verbal communication and presentational skills
• Knowledge of all social media platforms, best practices and industry standards
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential, experience with Wordfly and basic HTML preferred
• Must be able to act and think creatively
• Displays a strong work ethic with a goal to achieve
• An interest in opera or the performing arts is preferred, but not a requirement
• Adaptable to a flexible work schedule with the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as required
