Job Description

Soundstreams seeks an experienced and enthusiastic marketing professional to give voice to the organization on a national and international scale. A creative strategist with a proven track record in integrated marketing techniques, coupled with a passion for music and the performing arts will make the best candidate for this role.

A senior role in a tight-knit, high performing staff team, the Director of Marketing & External Relations plays a key role in advancing Soundstreams’ position by communicating the identity and value of Soundstreams’ work to a variety of external audiences.
S/he is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing an effective strategic communications (multi-channel marketing, public relations, corporate communications) program for Soundstreams that increases public awareness and support of Soundstreams concerts, events and activities, and builds and maintains the Soundstreams brand.


  • Post-secondary education in marketing/communications and/or 2-5 years relevant experience
  • Enthusiastic about the arts and in particular contemporary music and its intersection with other disciplines
  • Enjoys translating an array of artistic product into effective narrative-driven campaigns
  • Existing knowledge of the Canadian arts presentation ecology is an asset
  • Highly entrepreneurial, resourceful, flexible and a partnership builder with business acumen
  • A motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-paced, small office with a close-knit team of arts and culture lovers
  • A strategist who is highly focused, energetic and adept at planning, prioritizing and stewarding multiple projects
  • Superb writing skills (samples will be requested) in order to craft marketing collateral and development materials
  • A strong verbal and written communicator who can both craft clear prose in short order, and represent Soundstreams at public events and performances
  • Self-motivated and diplomatic – shares information in a team environment, listens and gives advice
  • Harmonizes multiple communication channels (web, social, print, radio, etc.) into an organization-wide integrated marketing plan with efficacy
  • Experience/comfort managing a website platform using CMS
  • Experience with SEO, web analytics, accessibility and user experience design
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is an asset
  • With support from the Executive Director and Artistic Director, set strategic audience development goals for the organization
  • Ensure that the marketing department has the appropriate systems and procedures in place to translate overall organizational goals and objectives into specific tactics
  • Develop, manage, and implement annual subscription, single ticket and mass e/mail individual giving campaigns to meet earned revenue targets
  • Stay on top of current audience and marketing trends and occasionally conduct primary audience research
  • Manage design and content for all marketing and public relations collateral
  • Oversee editorial calendar, creation of content, and production
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to author grant proposals to public and private sector funders
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with marketing partners
  • Represent Soundstreams at events (including some evenings and/or weekends)
  • Be an advocate for Soundstreams in the community
