Director, Arts & Culture Services


This is a wide-ranging opportunity for you to position the City of Toronto not only as a leading world cultural centre but also as a community of vibrant and engaged neighbourhoods active in the creation and promotion of innovative arts programs and services. As Director, Arts & Culture Services, you will take charge of a multifaceted portfolio and deliver high-level, top-quality programs to the public through arts services, public art development and special events. Using your sound leadership and managerial abilities, you will plan and manage the City of Toronto’s arts and culture activities as well as provide input and support for the design, development and implementation of strategies, initiatives and plans to enhance the City’s global creative, cultural and artistic competitiveness. This will involve, as an example, leveraging opportunities and ensuring enduring community legacies by leading the planning and development of special one-time projects such as the cultural component of the 2015 Pan Am/Para Pan Am Games.

A highly effective leader, you’ll be responsible for directing, guiding and motivating a diverse workforce and providing the processes and tools to increase efficiencies and improve the effectiveness of the City of Toronto’s arts and culture services. You will be responsible for the long-tern cultural vision, you will develop annual work plans consistent with the vision and, implement change and performance management processes, and mentor your workplace team. The Arts & Culture Services section’s annual operating budget and grant program, expenditure control and compliance with corporate policies, procedures and guidelines will also fall under your purview. Just as importantly, you will be directing innovative arts programming at cultural centres, art galleries and in the community through a range of programs, exhibits, media, performing and visual arts, film and much more.



Requirements:

Key to your success will be a history of senior management experience in the arts and culture sector as well as a post-secondary education in a relevant discipline. Your reputation as an experienced arts and culture manager precedes you, as does your known ability to lead and engage a multi-functional team, manage change and operate in an environment that promotes excellence. You have a track record that reflects strong stakeholder engagement, sound judgement and effective decision-making as well as considerable financial reporting and budget forecasting experience. Excellent strategic and lateral thinking skills, combined with the facility to lead complex projects from inception to implementation, round out your profile.
