Job Description

Reports to Senior Development Officer, Patron & Annual Giving

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s annual giving program is the foundation of the TSO’s fundraising efforts. The TSO is seeking a dynamic Development Officer, Annual Giving, who will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of broad-based giving programs (gifts of <$2,000), including Direct Response, Monthly Giving, and Young Patron Giving.


  • Work with the Individual Giving team to expand individual annual campaign programs to meet and surpass revenue targets
  • Manage the “Friends” (broad-based gifts < $2,000) and “Impresarios Club” (young patrons) donor membership portfolios, from cultivation through stewardship
  • Focus efforts on cultivation and acquisition of new annual donors through direct marketing channels (mail, phone, online) and targeted appeals
  • Draft direct response appeal copy that is compelling and targeted to diverse audiences
  • Draft stewardship communications that are thoughtful and meaningful for each constituency (Noteworthy newsletter, Impresarios Club e-newsletter)
  • In partnership with Development Operations team manage tele-fund campaign, direct mail, online appeals, and tribute giving, ensuring communications are integrated and timely, messaging is consistent with current philanthropic objectives, and that data segmentation is accurate and strategic
  • In partnership with Director of Communications, create individual giving collateral that supports campaign activity and reflects current case for support
  • Work with Marketing & Communications department to implement strategies for the cultivation of TSO audiences (ticket buyers/subscribers), to expand those relationships to include charitable gifts
  • In partnership with the Events team develop and manage donor engagement events (open rehearsals, backstage tours, post-concert socials, salons)
  • Manage the Young Leadership Council volunteer committee, including recruiting, grooming, and stewarding volunteers; direct and support the committee’s efforts
  • Ensure campaign activity is tracked effectively and efficiently in the database and that all mass communications and customized communications are up to date
  • Conduct regular performance analysis of campaign activity to refine efforts and improve ROI; provide weekly reports on campaign progress to date
  • Participate in planning, strategy, and evaluation of annual giving programs with the SDO, Patron & Annual Giving and the Development team
  • Act as a TSO representative at performances and other TSO events
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned


  • University degree, community college diploma or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in Annual Giving or fundraising, preferably in the cultural sector
  • Experience with direct mail campaigns and online giving; tele-fundraising campaign experience an asset
  • Experience with donor retention and acquisition strategies, implementing donor benefits, and events management
  • Superior writing skills
  • Strong analytical and data skills, including data segmentation techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to initiate, cultivate and maintain relationships easily
  • Organized; strong time and project management skills; results-oriented
  • Strong communicator: communicates professionally and comfortably with donors, volunteers and staff in person, by phone and in writing
  • Resourceful and independent while remaining comfortable working within the framework of an integrated development program and team-oriented environment
  • Highly professional, tactful, mature, conscientious; demonstrates high degree of personal integrity and adheres to the AFP Fundraising Code of Ethics and the Donor Bill of Rights
  • Advanced level PC skills (MS Office) and highly proficient user of at least one fundraising database (ex. Raiser’s Edge, Tessitura)
  • Adaptable to a flexible work schedule including select evenings and weekends
  • Experience in the performing arts sector and interest in classical music preferred

Flexibility in hours and ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends (during the September to June concert season) as part of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra team is required.
