Art Metropole is an internationally renowned artist-run centre that promotes the appreciation of artist-initiated publishing in any media, especially those formats predisposed to sharing and circulation. Art Metropole specializes in the contextualization and distribution of artist’s books, multiples, and related materials, including innovative formats and emergent technologies.

Art Metropole was founded in 1974 by the artists' collective General Idea as an artist-run centre. Art Metropole is a not-for-profit corporation incorporated under the laws of the province of Ontario and a registered charitable organization.

Job Description

Associate, Web and Archives (full time, 32 hrs per week)
Working in collaboration with AM’s staff and reporting to the Administrative and Executive Directors, the Associate, Web and Archives is responsible for the registration and maintenance of Art Metropole's inventory and archives and the representation of both online. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and research skills, working knowledge of inventory management systems, and a keen interest in the digital representation of images and artworks.
Art Metropole is maintained by a small group of artists and administrators working in collaboration to fulfill the institution’s mandate, under the governance of a Board of Directors. Art Metropole is seeking someone with proven collaborative skills and a desire to actively contribute to the institution’s history and continued service.

Job Description

Responsible for the registration and maintenance of AM’s inventory and archives and the representation of both online

  • Research and create detailed catalogue descriptions and images of inventory items for the web listing and inventory database
  • Work with the Associate, Shop and Inventory to coordinate inventory for fairs, standing orders and online orders
  • Occasional travel to art fairs with AM staff
  • Research, coordinate and maintain relationships with academic and collecting libraries, universities and other institutions, in collaboration with the Associate, Shop and Inventory
  • Work with the Associate, Shop and Inventory to fulfil loan agreements from the archive, collection, and shop inventory, correspond with borrowing institutions
  • Develop and coordinate social media, mailing list and related Art Metropole communications
  • Work with the Associate, Shop and Inventory to process and fulfil online and in-store sales and shipment

Responsible for assisting with the daily administration of Art Metropole

  • Assist with the compilation of reports and initiate communication regarding artist payments and tracking (1 day per week), in collaboration with the Associate, Shop and Inventory
  • Assist with grants and other funding applications related to field of activity
  • Administer and direct all inquiries through
  • Coordinate, schedule and oversee AM volunteers, in coordination with all staff
  • Work with the team to develop and implement programming and exhibits, in line with Art Metropole's mandate




  • Keen engagement and familiarity with new and old forms of artist-initiated publishing and distribution
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary art practices and non-profit artist-run centres
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS and PHP
  • Interest or experience in collaborative practice; proven team player
  • Excellent command of the English language (written and oral)
  • Experience writing or assisting with the preparation of grant applications and reports; or related experience
  • Social media management, Google G-Suite and Adobe CS/graphic design experience an asset
  • Studies in Library Science, Archives and Records Management, or Arts Administration considered an asset


Additional Info:

This position is remunerated at $37,440 CAD per annum and is based on 32 hours a week for 12 months of the year. Benefits include an extended health plan, 16 days vacation, and 5 days paid leave available annually for professional development.

The job entails working Saturdays and some evenings, and will require occasional national and international travel. This position is a two-year contract, with an option to renew, and carries an expected start date in mid September, 2017.
