Stratford Summer Music has been operating an annual multi-week music festival set in indoor and outdoor venues in Stratford, Ontario since 2001. With an artistic vision to produce, to the highest standards possible, an annual program of diverse and exciting musical performances by local, provincial, national and international artists and to provide the widest possible range of musical genres on our stages, Stratford Summer Music exposes our audiences to a high standard of musical excellence.

Job Description

The Artistic Director [AD] of Stratford Summer Music [SSM] is responsible for the development of SSM’s overall artistic vision.  The AD creates the vision for each season and plans all SSM programming, events and productions.  The Artistic Director of SSM reports directly and is accountable to the Board of Directors of the Stratford Arts Foundation [Board].
Essential Functions of the AD:
Develops, on an annual basis, the Festival Program of concerts, events and lectures for approval by the Board.
Initiates contact with artists, artist managements, and other pertinent individuals and institutions which may potentially participate in the SSM Festival.
Assists the General Manager in preparing the SSM Festival budget for approval by the Board. Upon approval of the budget, the Artistic Director and the General Manager execute their respective responsibilities within the boundaries of the budget.  
Supports and assists in the fundraising efforts and grant applications of the SSM Festival in co-responsibility with the General Manager and the Board.
Maintains financial balance between sponsorship monies and revenues from concerts/events/lectures and their overall cost, in accordance with the budget and Board approval.
Recommends to the General Manager or the Board potential candidates to perform administrative or artistic duties.
Works collaboratively with the General Manager in order to facilitate a high degree of communication, planning, stewardship and co-operation among all staff and with donors, sponsors, volunteers and the Stratford community at large.
Serves as a liaison with other cultural organizations, facilitating open communications among the SSM Festival, artists and public, collaborating on various Stratford-wide initiatives and helping set priorities where necessary.
Reports regularly to the Board on the progress of the season’s programming and execution.
Ensures the highest possible quality of all performances and activities.
Leads initiatives designed to improve and expand the artistic process.
Liaises with the Board, its Committees and SSM volunteers to support the activities they undertake on behalf of SSM, and attends Board Committee meetings if requested by Committee Chairs.
Undertakes such other tasks assigned by the Board of Directors as are consistent with the scope of the work of the AD.


Has a minimum of five years’ progressively more senior management level experience in arts leadership
Has an in-depth understanding of music festival operations, production and artistic processes.
Has a current network of musicians, colleagues and contacts in the music festival world in Canada and abroad
Is passionate about live music in all its forms
Is eager to foster SSM’s commitment to new and diverse musical and educational experiences
Is committed to SSM’s artistic diversity and accessibility goals

Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to manage relationships with a diverse range of personalities in various roles within the organization and in the larger local, national and international communities
Demonstrated ability to work collegially and productively with an engaged Board of Directors
Strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret information quickly and accurately and to implement directives
Sound knowledge of music festival programming
Contemporary knowledge of the musical performance world
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Ability to lead, as well as work within a team structure
Sound decision-making skills, and ability to analyze facts and situations and respond quickly as needed
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment
Ability to maintain complete confidentiality of information as required
