Job Description

The Canadian Opera Company (“COC”) aims to bring the transformative experience of opera to our local, national, and global audience every day of the year. To help achieve this goal, the COC is looking for a creative and highly motivated individual with a passion for opera and a deep understanding of storytelling to assist the Advancement Department in developing a broad range of communications materials across print, digital, and social media.

The role requires advanced writing, research, and interviewing skills, as well as demonstrated experience in using images and video, including production of photography and video, to craft materials that cultivate meaningful engagement and inspire philanthropic involvement with the work of the COC.

Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for producing materials in both digital and print formats to support fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship strategies. The Advancement Communications Officer is expected to develop, write, and edit stories, templates, and other content-driven Advancement collateral, participating in key stages of workflow from text to design, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders as appropriate. The portfolio includes, but is not limited to: annual fund letters, stewardship reports, major gift and corporate proposals, Board communications, donor profiles, presentations and speaking notes, e-mail copy, social media posts, etc.

In collaboration with relevant fund managers, the Advancement Communications Officer will evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and messaging; adapt materials to specific constituent groups within the COC community; and feed insights back into the overall Advancement communications programs to improve outcomes.

The Advancement Communications Officer will be proactive in ensuring that Advancement web pages on are relevant, integrated with broader COC content, and updated on a regular basis.


• 1-3 years’ experience in fundraising, media, journalism, online communications or related field
• Exceptionally strong writing for print and digital, and high proficiency with English grammar, spelling, and punctuation 
• Ability to adapt writing styles for various purposes, for different media requirements, and for different audiences (a portfolio of diverse work is an asset)
• Outstanding copyediting and proofreading skills 
• Advanced research, fact-checking, and interviewing skills
• Must be comfortable approaching a wide range of community members, artists, and stakeholders to craft compelling stories about the COC’s activities
• Strong project management skills: track record of successfully managing and executing a variety of creative communications initiatives, from conceptual stages through delivery and follow-up evaluation
• Strong graphic design sensibility and experience (Adobe Creative Suite)
• Experience with social networks, especially in a storytelling context
• Experience with social and data analysis, as well as reporting
• Must follow online communications trends and technologies
• Familiarity with mobile technology
• Technical fluency in HTML, Photoshop, Illustrator, Google Analytics, WordFly, CMS, and familiarity with SEO
• Video editing skills, broad experience with video production
• Must be able to act and think creatively
• Ability to work independently and take initiative, as well as embrace collaboration in a team environment when necessary
• Must be passionate and knowledgeable about opera; deeply invested in exploring its creative potential as an art form that emerges from the collision of many different artistic practices, histories, and viewpoints
• Knowledge of Canadian Press Style Guide an asset
• Knowledge of media and journalism are assets
• Adaptable to a flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends
• Sense of humour and willingness to take risks
