Dubbed “Toronto’s improv hub” by NOW Magazine and led by renowned improv veteran Julie Dumais Osborne, Bad Dog Theatre presents Theatresports – Toronto’s longest running improv show – every Saturday plus shows throughout the week at The Bad Dog Comedy Theatre - 875 Bloor St. W.

Job Description

The Academy Director is responsible for developing, implementing, administering and evaluating the Bad Dog Theatre Company’s Academy programs and educational offerings for youth and adults

It is the Bad Dog Academy’s mandate to teach, share and promote unscripted theatre and improvised comedy in Toronto. The Academy offers classes for all ages and levels of experience. Current offerings include: standalone classes, specialty drop-ins, a core foundation curriculum, performance-level training, week-long intensives and camps as well as professional development for artists. The Bad Dog Academy year is currently divided into four terms: Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall. Currently, the majority of Academy program offerings occur on site at the Bad Dog Comedy Theatre (875 Bloor St. W. - upstairs), though a growing number of courses and programs are also offered at off-site locations, as student needs and demand require.

The Academy Director reports to the General Manager and Artistic Director and is responsible for administering and delivering improv instruction for the community. The Academy Director will consult with the GM, AD, Board of Directors and organizations that represent adults and youth to determine their needs and develop improv programs in response to those needs.


  • Administer Bad Dog Theatre Company’s Academy Programming
  • Prepare a yearly plan for Adult & Youth programming
  • Schedule classes, intensives, showcases, facilities and volunteers as required
  • Prepare the program budget
  • Prepare financial and program reports
  • Record information on and prepare reports concerning programs, costs, numbers of participants and equipment and facility use
  • Provide monthly and yearly reports about programs and opportunities
  • Ensure that all programs and activities are implemented according to relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Correspond with students about programming and social events
  • Maintain the Academy’s web presence
  • Ensure faculty are effectively tracking and assessing student progress and attendance
  • Facilitate end-of-term reports for students & parents from applicable faculty
  • Schedule Academy Tuesday, All Play, Grad Show and drop-in performances & instruction
Promote the Bad Dog Academy
  • Ensure that individuals and community organizations are aware of available activities
  • Coordinate a community relations campaign to promote programs
  • Arrange for advertising and promotion of Academy programs
  • Monitor the use of equipment and facilities
  • Request and assist in the development of any necessary promotional materials
  • Expand the Academy’s current reach by increasing awareness of programming and initiatives
Research and develop programs outside of current offerings
  • Communicate with students and guardians to determine needs and interests
  • Research funding sources and project requirements
  • Access funding and prepare funding proposals
  • Ensure program information is available through a variety of platforms
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs
  • Work with the AD to develop educational offerings in line with the Bad Dog Theatre Company’s core values and pedagogy


Bad Dog encourages potential applicants from outside our discipline, however this is a very particular sort of work environment and an understanding of the current improv landscape is absolutely essential.

The Academy Director must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • fluency with Bad Dog’s artistic programming and curriculum objectives
  • the legislation, regulations, policies and procedures for program development and implementation
  • the legislation, regulations, policies  and procedures for involving youth in community programs
  • office administration
  • robust understanding of improvised theatre and philosophical approaches
  • familiarity with the current landscape of similar institutions providing improv training in the GTA
  • The Academy Director must demonstrate the following skills:
  • minimum two years’ experience in arts administration or the nonprofit field
  • ability to administer adult & youth programming
  • demonstrated resourcefulness and self-starter personality type
  • computer skills including the ability to operate computerized accounting, spreadsheet, word-processing, graphics and website development programs at a highly proficient level (experience with web maintenance through Squarespace, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook & Instagram, CRM systems, design programs such as Canva/Photoshop and email campaign systems such as Mailchimp & SurveyMonkey)
  • ability to achieve goals and targets without excessive supervision
  • team building skills
  • analytical and problem solving skills
  • effective verbal, presentation, written and listening communications skills
  • effective negotiation and mediation skills

Additional Info:

The Academy Director will manage a number of projects at one time, and will need excellent organizational, time and stress management skills to complete the required tasks. Workload will fluctuate throughout the year, dependant on programming - but the weekly compensation for the role will remain constant. We're projecting this as a 30- 33 hr per week position with growth potential.

Administrative work for this position is done remotely, with weekday meetings and working sessions held as needed at the Bad Dog Comedy Theatre. The Academy Director will provide their own laptop or desktop computer for administrative work. The Academy Director will be required to be present for events on evenings and weekends as needed. Periodically, the Academy Director will be required to complete additional professional development & uptraining as coordinated by the theatre (i.e. AODA compliance training, inclusion training, customer service modules).

This position will start in mid-August and will begin with a period of orientation with the outgoing Academy Director, AD & GM. Start date is not fixed.
