WORKSHOP 1: What’s A Business? Your New Business and the Law!

Saturday, March 11, 2017 – 10am-1pm

What’s a business? Is it a corporation? Or something else? What’s a not-for-profit? What’s a charity? Are there alternative ways that I can form a company more in line with my activities in the creative sector? All new businesses have legal implications. Understanding the law and planning accordingly can save you time and money and avoid risk as you grow your business.

The law can be a tool to help new business owners create the type of company structure which reflects their own values and help set the expectations of their customers and partners.

The law can also create difficulties if not properly understood or complied with.

In this workshop we’ll look at ways to form companies, including alternative structures like not-for-profits and B-Corps and discuss potentially complex legal issues that can slow the growth of your business and take advantage of solutions and protections offered by the legal system.

You’ll learn:

•     Whether to incorporate or not incorporate?

•     What not-for-profits, social enterprise or B-corp company structures are and why they might be right for you.

•     Your obligations for company reporting.

•     A step-by-step approach to company formation.
