WorkInCulture is seeking experienced individuals to share their knowledge and expertise to support participants of the Growing Earned Revenue Mentoring Program (GERM Program).

Through the GERM Program, WorkInCulture will match non-profit arts and heritage organizations in Ontario with a professional experienced with identifying and expanding revenue growing opportunities. Mentors will dedicate up to three hours monthly over a 12 month period to provide support to a participant working on a self-selected earned revenue-producing project.

We are looking for potential mentors who will contribute to the learning development of participants on a one-to-one basis, either in-person, by telephone, virtually (through Skype) or in any other manner that best suits the mentoring pair.

Mentors will help participants identify potential opportunities, and keep project goals and objectives in sight while building strong relationships.

Required skills

Applicants should have some experience providing guidance and/or handling an issue or project that participants may be interested in learning from.

Submissions are open to professionals from any field who are able to adapt their expertise to the skills, knowledge and learning priorities of an arts and culture related project.

Successful applicants should demonstrate their ability to navigate specific learning objectives and priorities including to):

  • Offering an existing or new service/resource/event for a fee
  • Charging for a previously free service/resource/event
  • Expanding and diversifying ticket sales through new approaches
  • Developing and marketing merchandise related to core offerings
  • Offering retail options (on-site, online, pop-ups)
  • Developing or increasing revenue from rental space
  • Developing or increasing revenue from memberships
  • Offering consulting services

Mentors will remain open minded and be able to empower participants throughout the learning and development partnership. They will agree to regular communication and maintain a collegial and courteous relationship with their paired participant.

Participation as a mentor does not go without its benefits! Aside from the ability to enhance a professional career through volunteering, mentors benefit in many ways, some of which include improving management and leadership skills, empowering the next generation of leaders, as well as building relationships, networks and contacts.

WorkInCulture will also profile mentors through its online channels, upon each mentor’s approval.  Those who are committed to giving back to the sector through mentorship will be celebrated through WorkInCulture’s networks (over 1900 followers on Facebook; over 4500 on Twitter; and over 100,000 visitors on its website).

Additional Info

Applicants should note that their participation will be on a volunteer basis throughout the process and learning partnership.

Mentoring teams will have the opportunity to attend a series of learning activities provided by WorkInCulture. Each mentoring team is required to attend a half-day Kick-Off Workshop on May 30, 2017 from 10am – 2pm in Toronto (venue TBC).

Potential mentors will need to attend a preliminary phone or in-person meeting with a proposed GERM participant to explore compatibility. These meetings will be scheduled in advance of the May 30th Kick-Off Workshop during the months of April and May.

The mentoring period will run from June 1, 2017 – May 31, 2018
